Why Families Choose Lugwardine
At LPA, our youngest learners start in our spacious reception class, complete with an enclosed outdoor area and access to the extensive school grounds. Our pupils have an exciting time, learning through a play-based curriculum and following the Early Years Foundation Stage. At Lugwardine, your child’s time in Reception is about more than just the classroom; it’s about building the confidence and social skills they need for life. As children progress through our caring, single‑form‑entry school, they benefit from a community where everyone is known personally, while enjoying great facilities and a skilled, dedicated staff. As an active school, we ensure children are regularly involved in enriching adventures and challenges, both in our school environment and throughout the wider county. We have an active PTFA who put on fun events throughout the year and provides the school with generous funds for things such as new books and musical instruments.
Lugwardine was inspected by Ofsted in March 2025 and we are delighted that they graded us as 'good' in every area. You can read the wonderful report here.
Facilities
We benefit from large school grounds including a large playground and playing field; lots of adventure play equipment; a Forest School site, including a pond; an outdoor classroom and a greenhouse. Our EYFS and Preschool children have their own playgrounds, field, and secret garden, too, so there is always somewhere to explore. We pride ourselves on the number of extra-curricular clubs we provide, giving children the opportunity for more experiences and to develop their interests.
We have onsite breakfast and after school club every day to support families with childcare.
We are proud to be part of the Three Counties Academy Trust and benefit from working closely with the other primary schools in the trust.
We are incredibly proud of our wonderful Reception class and our dedicated EYFS team. We love welcoming prospective families to our open days at Lugwardine, and it’s always a joy to meet new faces. Year R | Lugwardine Primary Academy
Lugwardine Primary Academy uses Herefordshire Local Authority as our admissions authority. Details of the application process can be found by following the iamge link below. There are details about the application process and guidance to complete your application but if you would like any assistance or have any concerns, please do contact the school and we would be pleased to help you.
The admissions process opens in September of the year before your child is due to start school and closes in January. Children in England are entitled to start school in the September following their 4th birthday and must start their education by the beginning of the term after their 5th birthday. Further information on how to apply can be found in our admissions policy, under the documents tab. The policy underwent consultation in Spring 2026 and is next due for consultation in 2032.
Our Reception Class
An 'In Year Transfer' application is the process which a parent or legal guardian must complete to secure a school place other than at the normal point of admission into reception. In-year transfers are most common for families who move house to a new area or can no longer easily access their current school.
If you are considering moving your child for any other reason, please read the Changing Schools - Advice to Parents document.
If you are interested in moving your child to Lugwardine, you will need to inform your current school and complete an In-Year Transfer form. This has to be signed by both parties and handed in to your chosen school who will let you
know if they can accept your child.
