In Year 1 are Mr Lewis (class teacher), Ms Fodor and Mrs Lessi (teaching assistants).

Welcome to Year 1: Building Brighter Futures!

The transition from Reception to Year 1 is a wonderful milestone in your child’s education. This year is all about sparking curiosity, building independence, and watching as your child’s skills in reading, writing, and math truly take flight! In Year 1, we bridge the gap between the play-based learning of the Early Years and the exciting challenges of the Key Stage 1 curriculum.

A Day in the Life of Year 1

Our classroom is a hive of activity where every day brings a new adventure. A typical day includes:

  • Morning Welcome & Literacy: We start our day together, diving into high-quality texts that inspire our creative writing, vocabulary building, and sentence structure.

  • The Power of Phonics: Continuing phonics journey we have daily focused sessions to ensure every child becomes a confident, fluent reader.

  • Maths Mastery: We use a hands-on approach to explore numbers, shapes, and patterns, making sure the "why" behind the math is always clear and fun.

  • Foundation Subjects: Our afternoons are filled with discovery! From exploring the past in History to investigating the natural world in Science, we cover a broad and exciting curriculum.

  • Active Learning: We believe children learn best when they are moving. Whether it’s PE, outdoor learning, or "brain breaks," we keep our energy levels high.

  • Creative Time: Weekly sessions dedicated to Art, Design Technology, and Music allow our pupils to express their unique personalities.

Literacy & Phonics: Becoming Confident Readers

In Year 1, reading is the key that unlocks the whole curriculum.

  • Phonics: We continue with our small-group RWI sessions, tailored specifically to your child’s current level. We focus on blending sounds for reading and spelling.

  • Daily Reading: We love to share stories! Beyond our phonics lessons, we enjoy daily class stories and individual reading time to foster a genuine love for books.

Marvellous Mathematics

Our Year 1 mathematicians are busy explorers! This year, we move from basic counting to deep understanding. We focus on:

  • Number Bonds: Mastering addition and subtraction facts within 10 and 20.

  • Place Value: Understanding tens and ones and how numbers are built.

  • Measurement & Geometry: Learning about length, weight, and 2D/3D shapes through practical investigations.

  • Problem Solving: Encouraging children to explain how they found an answer, building their mathematical vocabulary.

Learning at Home: Partnering with You

Your support at home is the "secret ingredient" to your child’s success!

  • The 5-Minute Rule: Reading for just five minutes every evening makes a massive difference. Whether it’s their school book or a favorite bedtime story, every word counts!

  • Real-Life Maths: Ask your child to help with the "grown-up" maths—counting out change at the shop, telling the time for dinner, or measuring ingredients for a Sunday bake.

  • Talk, Talk, Talk: Encourage your child to tell you about their day using full sentences. Asking "What was the most interesting thing you learned today?" is a great way to start.

Staying Connected

  • Class Dojo & Email: Please check Class Dojo regularly for updates on what we are learning in class and any special announcements.

  • Book Bags: Please ensure book bags are brought in every Friday so we can refresh your child's reading treasures for the week ahead.

  • Open Door Policy: We are a team! If you ever have questions or just want to share a "wow" moment from home, please arrange a time to chat. We are always here to support you and your child.

Thank you for being part of our Lugwardine family—let's make Year 1 an unforgettable year!
