In Year 2 are Mrs Pullin and Mr Goodarzi (class teachers).

Welcome to Year 2: The Grand Finale of Key Stage 1!

Year 2 is a truly special year at Lugwardine. It is a time when the foundations laid in Reception and Year 1 click into place, and the children grow into confident, independent learners. We focus on building stamina, deepening knowledge, and preparing our pupils for the exciting jump to Key Stage 2—all while keeping the magic of learning alive!

A Day in Year 2

As the leaders of Key Stage 1, our Year 2 students follow a structured yet creative daily routine:

  • Morning Mastery: We kick off with focused Literacy and Maths sessions where children apply their skills to more complex problems and longer pieces of writing.

  • Reading & Fluency: We transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn," exploring wonderful chapter books and non-fiction texts.

  • The Wider Curriculum: Our afternoons are a journey through Geography, History, and Computing and much more. Whether we are mapping our local area or learning about great explorers, the learning is always hands-on.

  • PE & Wellbeing: We continue to prioritise physical health and mindfulness, ensuring our minds and bodies are ready for the challenges of the day.

Mastering the Tables: Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS)

In Year 2, we begin our journey into the world of multiplication and division. Mastering the 2, 5, and 10 times tables is a fundamental milestone this year!

To make this journey fun and high-energy, we use Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS).

  • In School: We have regular "jam sessions" where children can build their "Rock Status" while improving their recall speed.

  • At Home: Every child has a personal login to access TTRS from home. Short, daily bursts of practice on a tablet or computer are one of the most effective ways to build "maths muscles."

  • Confidence: By turning drills into a game, children lose the "fear" of big numbers and enter Year 3 with a rock-solid foundation.

Literacy: From Sentences to Stories

Our focus in Year 2 shifts toward building stamina in writing. We learn how to:

  • Use expanded noun phrases to make our descriptions "pop."

  • Use a variety of conjunctions (like because, if, that, but) to create complex sentences.

  • Perfect our "pre-cursive" handwriting to ensure our work is as beautiful as our ideas.

Helping at Home

  • TTRS Battles: Encourage your child to log in to Times Tables Rock Stars for 5-10 minutes a day. Why not challenge them to a "Rock Slam"?

  • The Power of Fluency: In Year 2, we look for "smooth reading." Encourage your child to read with expression—can they give the characters different voices?

  • Maths in the Wild: Use real-life moments to practice division. "If we have 10 grapes and share them between 2 people, how many do we each get?"

Communication & Book Bags

  • Staying in Touch: We continue to use Class Dojo and email for all class updates, photos of our learning, and homework reminders.

  • Friday Book Change: Please bring book bags in every Friday. By this stage, children are often reading longer books, so we encourage them to keep track of their progress in their reading records.

  • A Partnership: Year 2 is a big year, and we are here to support you every step of the way. If you have any questions about the curriculum or how to support your child at home, our door is always open.

Let’s make Year 2 a year of soaring confidence and "Rock Star" achievements!
